Physical Features

Mountain Ranges

One mountain range runs down through most of Italy.  It's called the Apennines Mountains.  It is Italy's main source of water.  Three parts make up the Apennines Mountains: northern, central, and southern.  The central part of the Apennines are located partially in Rome.

Rivers

One of the most well-known and important rivers in Italy is the Tiber River.  The Tiber River runs through the center of the Latium region where Rome is located.  In ancient Rome, the people used the Tiber River for transportation, food, and agriculture.

Culture

People

There are about 3,000,000 people that live in Rome and a total of over 4,000,000 that live in the greater area of Rome.  The majority of the people in Rome speak Italian as their first language.  98% of the people in Rome practice Christianity, or more specifically Roman Catholicism. Italians make up about 90% of the people, and the other 10% are non-Italians who are from other European and Asian countries such as Romanians, Polish, Filipinos, and Bangladeshis.

Architecture

If you took a walk through Rome, you would be able to see many magnificent works of architecture from various time periods such as Medieval, Renaissance, Baroque, Neoclassicism, and Fascist.  Some of them bring in millions of tourists a year, and they are:  St. Peter's Basilica, Colosseum, Pantheon, Roman Forum, and Trevi Fountain.  Romans built many churches, fountains, statues, arches, bridges, and aqueducts.  Since Rome is known for many of its unique historical sites and architecture, it is the number one tourist attraction in all of Italy.
